MSM
Sulphur Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a natural
constituent of the environment in which it is found in plants,
in milk and urine of both bovines and humans. It is a normal
oxidation product of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) which is
only found in the natural environment and may be part of
the natural global sulfur cycle. Although found in the form
of MSM in most foods, cooking and processing treatments
tend to destroy the natural biological value. Some diets
could therefore be deficient in sulfur, leading to physiological
disorders. Sulfur deficiency manifests itself in unhealthy
hair, skin and nails, decreased mental alertness, muscle
and joint pain, and reduced energy. Sulfur is the fourth
most abundant mineral found in the human body and is essential
for many bodily functions. Insufficient amounts of sulfur
will cause a shortage of essential proteins and many other
substances found in the body. Sulfur is very important in
allergies, arthritis, asthma, chronic fatigue, constipation,
diabetes, digestive disorders, headaches, muscle pain and
toxic buildup. A sulfur supplement in bio-available form
is essential in such cases. MSM is Methylsulfonylmethane
or dimethylsulfone (DMSO2). DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and
MSM have been used therapeutically to strengthen hair, nails
and skin for several years. Of these, DMSO has a typical
sulfur odor while MSM (which is a stable metabolite) of
DMSO, is odorless. MSM would therefore be the preferred
form of sulfur supplementation.
